The Air Force's Self-Protect High-Energy Laser Demonstrator

The US Air Force's Research Laboratory (AFRL) is embarking on a project to equip military aircraft with an advanced self-defence capability against newer and more sophisticated missile threats. Under the Self-Protect High-Energy Laser Demonstrator (SHIELD), the AFRL will demonstrate a low-power laser in the 2019 timeframe. The agency issued the first of three element awards in August 2016, with Northrop Grumman receiving a contract to develop the beam control system.
