War Books: The Operational Level of War

This week’s installment comes from Kevin Benson, a retired U.S. Army colonel and former director of the School of Advanced Military Studies who was the Coalition Forces Land Component Command J5 (Plans) at the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom. We gave him the following prompt: What books would you recommend for readers who want to better understand the operational level of war, where tactics and strategy meet? Kevin originally compiled this list for us in 2023, but we’re highlighting it again and taking the opportunity to introduce his newly published book, Expectation of Valor: Planning for the Iraq War, one of the most readable descriptions available of real-world military planning at the operational level of war.
